TEMPLATE OF LETTER
SENT TO NON-COMPLIANT GP SURGERY RE. DISTRIBUTION OF REVALIDATION LEAFLET
____________________________________________________________________________________
I wrote to you on _________ enclosing a leaflet about patients’ roles in Revalidation and, in particular, the opportunity now available to them to support the development of better medical care through comment in the process of your GP Annual Appraisals.
I am surprised to have received no response to this item of my letter, nor from any of the Practice doctors, or from the Practice Manager. As you know, Revalidation requires that each doctor involves patients to contribute, through the ‘Multi Source Feedback’ element, to their Annual Appraisal, and I am sure that you will agree that this is a unique opportunity for doctors and patients to work together to raise the standards of medical practice.
As I am sure you are aware, Good Medical Practice requires that
1. You must listen to patients, take account of their views, and respond honesty to their
questions.
2. You must give patients the information they want, or need to know, in a way that they can
understand. You must make sure that arrangements are made, wherever possible, to meet
patients’ language and communication needs.
NB: ‘You must’ is used for an over-riding duty or principle
You will appreciate that when I sent you the Revalidation leaflet - designed to increase patient participation in Appraisals - I was trying to work with you to ensure the more effective implantation of Good Medical Practice (as in points 1 and 2 above). By not replying, you have somewhat undermined this important aspiration.
Would you be so kind enough to ensure that every patient of the practice now has access to the Revalidation leaflet – copy attached.
Could we also discuss some of the outcomes of the GPs’ Appraisals in relation to your learning through reflective practice on comments made by patients through the Multi Source Feedback?
