                                  REVALIDATION OPERATIONAL DATA REPORTS
____________________________________________________________________________________

The Responsible Officer is a licensed Doctor who is usually the Medical Director or their Deputy, of that organisation.

A Responsible Officer can make one of three recommendations. They can:

  • Make a positive recommendation that the Doctor is up-to-date, fit to practise and should be revalidated
  • Request a deferral because they need more information to make a recommendation about the Doctor. This might happen where there is insufficient evidence to support a recommendation about the Doctor’s fitness to practise, or where the Doctor is participating in an ongoing process locally
  • Notification that the Doctor has failed to engage with any of the local systems or processes (such as appraisal) that support revalidation.
Data reports are about the revalidation decisions made. These operational data reports are available by country - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The reports include all designated bodies. Data for designated bodies that have three or less doctors connected to them, is reported as a combined total in these reports.

In April 2013, the structure of the NHS in England changed - which means the report for England includes both organisations which existed pre and post this re-structure.

Published Operational Data Reports
The GMC publishes data reports about the revalidation decisions it has made. These Operational Data Reports are available by country. The reports include all designated bodies. Data for designated bodies that have three or less doctors connected to them is reported as a combined total in these reports.

The current set of reports cover the period between the start of revalidation on 03 December 2012 and 28 February 2015 and monthly thereafter.  The Reports can be found using the following link:
                                               http://www.gmc-uk.org/doctors/revalidation/revalreports.asp

Revalidation Implementation Advisory Board
The Revalidation Implementation Advisory Board was established in March 2013 to provide advice to the GMC about how effectively revalidation is operating during the first year. It gives insight from a range of perspectives about how the system is working on the ground, and how different groups including doctors, responsible officers (ROs), patients, the public and employers are experiencing revalidation. This forms an important part of how the GMC is monitoring the implementation of revalidation.

Updates on the implementation of revalidation, including an analysis of emerging data, to the Revalidation Implementation Advisory Board, can be found using the following link:
                                                          http://www.gmc-uk.org/about/council/21121.asp

The Reports are Excel spreadsheets and cover the following:
  • Designated Body Name
  • Country/Region
  • Number of total approved recommendations
  • Number of approved positive recommendations
  • Number of approved requests for deferral (insufficient evidence to support a recommendation)
  • Number of approved requests for deferral (participating in an ongoing process)
  • Number of approved notifications of failure to engage
