THE 'BREXIT TREATY'
2 pages
At 11pm on 31 December, the agreement provides for the UK to take back control of our laws, affording no role for EU law and no jurisdiction for the European Court of Justice. The only laws we will have to obey are the ones made by the Parliament we elect.

HOW THE NHS WORKS ...
20 pages
If anyone is interested, this links to a good summary of who does what in the current NHS, what it means, and what it costs, etc.
'NICE' RECOMMEND 'DIGITAL'
1 page
In a new draft guideline, NICE says that digital interventions such as apps, wearable devices and online programmes and websites may help people achieve health goals. This includes helping people to be more physically active, manage their weight, quit smoking, reduce alcohol intake or reduce unsafe sexual behaviour.
JEREMY HUNT HAS BEEN ELECTED CHAIR OF THE COMMONS' HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE COMMITTEE
Mr Hunt, whose victory was announced last night, said afterwards: “For my last six months as Health Secretary, social care was formally added to my responsibilities, but it was not long enough to bring forward reforms or — more crucially – a funding settlement for social care.

“That is what I will be pressing for, because the NHS will continue to fall over every winter until we fix social care, risking both patient safety and staff morale.

I’ll also focus on making faster progress on mental health and patient safety; recent maternity scandals show we can never be complacent. I look forward to working with my committee to provide a strong, independent voice that supports NHS staff and patients in a very pressured period.”
TWO-HOUR, EXPERT, RAPID RESPONSE TEAM ...
2 pages
Expert rapid response teams will be on hand within two hours to help support older people to remain well at home and avoid hospital admissions, under new plans outlined by the NHS today.

Local health service and council teams will begin the roll out of Urgent Community Response teams from April, as part of the NHS’ Long Term Plan to support England’s ageing population and those with complex needs.
FUNDING FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF HEALTHCARE
2 pages
In the past five years local planning authorities failed to spend more than a third of the funding they secured for the development of healthcare infrastructure, according to a report by the think tank Reform.

The report says that of £87m available to planners, more than £34m is currently unspent. The report blames a lack of awareness of the Section 106 planning contributions process, insufficient expertise and skills among staff, and poor co-ordination. It concludes that the NHS is missing out on potentially millions of pounds that could go towards improving and delivering vital services for patients.
2020 GP PATIENT SURVEY
If you want to look at the survey, it can be found at www.gp-patient.co.uk

This link will enable you to enter your own GP Practice, by name or by postcode, and will tell you how many surveys went out, how many were returned, and what the positives and negatives of the responses were.
MOST NHS COMPUTERS RUNNING DECADE-OLD VERSION OF WINDOWS
The NHS has been given another 11 months of support for a decade-old version of Microsoft Windows, while about half of its computers are still running the softfware.

This is despite NHS organisations having been ordered in spring 2018 to migrate all their devices by today (Tuesday 14 January), because Microsoft was due to withdraw its support — such as security features, technical support or software updates — for Windows 7.

As the migration has taken longer than expected, trusts, clinical commissioning groups, and national NHS organisations have now been given until December to move to using Windows 10 on all computers and laptops.
Under the revised deal, the NHS will continue to receive support from Microsoft until 14 January 2021, as the migration has taken longer than expected.

The latest figures from NHS Digital show the majority of relevant devices in the health service are still using Windows 7, which was released in 2009.

PCN BRIEFING PAPER FOR VOLUNTARY SECTOR ORGANISATIONS

19 pages
National Voices, the representative body for the charity and voluntary sectors has published a briefing about Primary Care Networks aimed at the sector might supply knowledge, expertise and training to help PCNs develop.
The authors argue that this could be vital in making sure PCNs become more closely engaged with their local communities.
COMMUNITY PHARMACIES

7 pages
PSNC, the representative body for Community Pharmacy has explained how funding will be distributed during 2020-2021.
BETTER COMMUNITY REHAB SERVICES
12 pages
Better community rehabilitation could improve the lives of people who suffer illness or injury and who currently feel abandoned by health and care services.

This is the main conclusion of a report by 24 charities, professional bodies and trades unions, which says that a more joined-up approach to community rehabilitation involving physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social care and the voluntary sector would not only benefit patients but would take pressure off hospital services.
TOWARDS INTEGRATED HEALTH WITH SOCIAL CARE
A Clinical Commissioning Group is merging its Chief Officer role with a senior Local Authority position in a bid to move closer to integrated health and social care services.

Kernow CCG and Cornwall Council will appoint an Accountable Officer who will take on the duties currently performed by the CCG’s Chief Officer and council’s Strategic Director for Adult Social Care and Health.  The two organisations are aiming to have the post-holder in place for the start of the new financial year. The appointment will be for an initial trial period of 18 months.  The organisations said the new role has the potential to deliver “far-reaching benefits” by providing “joint oversight, leadership and focus”.

Cornwall’s demography includes a higher proportion of elderly people compared to many other parts of England.  A handful of areas have merged their CCG Chief Oofficer role with a senior position at the Local Authority. Examples include Portsmouth, Tameside and Glossop, and Bury — although, in these three cases, the CCG Chief Officer role was merged with the Local Authority’s Chief Executive position.
