CQC - SMALLER INSPECTIONS
The Care Quality Commission will move to a new approach of “smaller and more frequent” hospital inspections, the regulator has announced.
While every Trust will be inspected annually, smaller inspection teams will look at an organisation’s leadership and one core service “as a minimum”, with core services already rated good or outstanding being scrutinised less frequently.
David Behan: ‘It doesn’t make sense to us to just repeat the inspections again’
The changes to hospital inspection are part of the regulator’s new strategy, published on Tuesday.

INDEMNITY FOR GPs
English GPs move north of the border due to spiralling indemnity fees - 20 May 2016
GPs in the English borders are crossing over to work exclusively in Scotland after identifying that indemnity costs are one third of what they would pay working full time in England.
The Chief Clinical Officer of NHS Northumberland CCG said that several senior GPs who have switched to locum work after a career in English General Practice, have said working south of the border ‘makes no financial sense’ due to flaws in the indemnity system.
Indemnity providers said that a GP practising in England is three times more likely to face a Clinical Negligence claim than and the value of the claim is likely to be higher as well.
A GPC negotiator has also said that he has seen his indemnity quote by 500% when moving from Scotland to England.
Local leaders said that the situation is compounding workforce issues in a region already facing ‘alarming’ fill rates to GP training posts.
It was reported last year that some doctors quoted £30,000 for annual cover including out-of-hours, with GPs reporting an average fee increase of 25% last year.

GENERAL PHARMACEUTICAL COUNCIL CHALLENGES THE CQC
The group that manages the GPC’s funding is launching a judicial review against the CQC, arguing that its inspection process is not fair, equitable or ‘within the parameters of natural justice’.
A letter from the General Practitioners Defence Fund to LMCs and GPC members revealed that the GPC was taking up the case of a practice that lost an appeal to the CQC about its inspection rating.
It said that, following legal advice, it would use this case to ‘ensure that the CQC process is set before the courts’.
