The list is updated on a weekly basis.

Doctors who don’t have a Responsible Officer can arrange for a suitable person, approved by the GMC, to make a revalidation recommendation about their fitness to practise. This may be arranged on an individual basis, but some doctors have obtained prior approval to act as a suitable person for defined groups of doctors.

Only UK organisations can be designated bodies, because the legal rules that determine this only cover the UK. The list is updated weekly to reflect new or updated bodies. This list includes the names of that the designated bodies the GMC holds on its list, including locum agencies.
Designated bodies are listed under their full title as they’re recorded in our database. So if you’re searching for your designated body in GMC Online, use the name, or part of the name, exactly as it appears in this list. Organisations beginning with ‘The’ are not listed under ‘T’ on this page, but by the initial letter of the next word in their name; for example, The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust is listed under P. Organisations whose names begin with ‘NHS’ are listed under ‘N’ - but then alphabetically by the initial letter of the next word in their name. For example, NHS Haringey comes after NHS Hampshire.

The system is based on Regulations overseen by the GMC, which also operates the Fitness to Practice procedures for doctors. MEDICAL REVALIDATION - WRITTEN MINISTERIAL STATEMENT
19 October 2012
The Secretary of State for Health (Mr Jeremy Hunt):
"Today, I am announcing that from 03 December 2012, revalidation of doctors in the
UK will commence."
This announcement follows the October 2010 commitment by the General Medical Council (GMC) and Department of Health to deliver a streamlined system of revalidation that provides assurance to the public and adds value for both patients and doctors. The tests of readiness for revalidation, as set out in that commitment, have now been met and I have received sufficient evidence from the UK Revalidation Programme Board that all four UK countries are suitably prepared to proceed with implementation.

PATIENT ORGANISATIONS CALL ON GOVERNMENT TO GIVE REVALIDATION THE GO-AHEAD
09 August 2012
Nine patient organisations have called on the UK Government to give the go ahead for a new system of regular checks for doctors in the UK, arguing that patients need to know that the doctor treating them is competent and safe to practise.
In a statement sent to Andrew Lansley, the Secretary of State for Health, all of the organisations agree that patients and the public need to be sure that the doctor who is treating them is up-to-date and fit to practise and they hope he will confirm in the Autumn that revalidation will go ahead at the end of this year.
Statement signed by:
National Voices - Patients Association - National Association of LINks' Members
National Association of Patient Participation - Academy of Medical Royal Colleges
Patient/Lay Group - Action against Medical Accidents - Scotland Patients Association
