The Care Quality Commission has “found examples of avoidable and unintentional harm” created by a fragmented health and care system.
In its interim report on the local system reviews it was asked to carry out by the Department of Health, the regulator said it saw “too many examples of people not being treated in the right place, by the right person, at the right time”.

The report said:
- “Unnecessary pressure [is] placed on services that are not designed to meet the needs of people who use them”;
- A focus on delayed discharges of care was “diverting attention from important issues” such as social care and GP capacity; and
- Funding flows and performance metrics means joined up care is “hindered” as individual organisations try to meet their targets.
NHS England has launched a campaign to remind the public that GP appointments are available for those that need them over the Christmas holidays.
From 22 December 2017 to 07 January 2018 (excluding Christmas Day), urgent appointments are available.
A range of resources have been produced to support this campaign which can be tailored for use locally. This includes posters, social media advertising and other display materials.

ACCOUNTABLE CARE ORGANISATIONS - WHERE IS PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT?
01 December 2017
We hear that NHS England faces a tough dialogue with the Treasury post-Budget and will, most likely get the go-ahead for its latest plan – to set up Accountable Care Organisations (ACOs). For some, it is a rational response to the failure of the Lansley structural reorganisation – a logical extension to the 44 STPs created in 2016. For others, it is the clearest yet pointer to a privatised NHS, USA-style.
